The wave sets the pace

Sea of Tranquility › Apple TV
The wave rises, you breathe in; it falls, you breathe out. No voice: the landscape sets the pace, on the sea, on Mars or among the rings of Saturn, and you control it all with the remote.
Like it? It's something else on a TV.
This is the app, drawing itself live in your browser.
Most meditation apps are a voice over a pretty background. This one has no voice: the landscape fills the screen and moves at a breathing pace. You pick the mode, the length, the place and the time of day, and press Start.
When the wave rises, you breathe in; when it falls, you breathe out. On Mars the dust breathes; on Saturn, the ice of the rings. Sessions of 1, 3, 5 or 10 minutes, or no time limit, and five patterns:
A boat moves slowly across the sea; on Mars you cross the dunes like a rover. 3 to 20 minutes, or no time limit, and at the end you see how far you went. If you like, a short thought appears every so often.
Pick 15, 30, 45 or 60 minutes. You breathe slowly, the waves calm down little by little, and at the end the picture and the sound fade out together, slowly, with no bell and no summary screen. Then your Apple TV goes to sleep as usual.
Explore: no clock and no guide; the arrows on the remote take you from place to place and from one time of day to another. Adventure: you sail, and every so often something happens in the distance, like a whale at sea, meteors on Mars or a comet at Saturn.
Each destination has its own ground, sky, times of day and sound. Tap «Watch it live» and the demo above takes you there. More about each world: what Mars is like and the rings of Saturn.
Waves to the horizon, by day, at sunset or at night, with the moon in today's phase.
Sand and shoreline: as you breathe in, the water moves up the beach; as you breathe out, it pulls back and leaves foam.
Dunes where there may once have been an ocean. At sunset, the Martian sun has a blue halo.
You float above the rings, in silence, among chunks of ice, with Saturn on the horizon.
Open sea and Beach, by day, at sunset and at night, or on Auto, which follows the real time of day. Breathe, Sail, Sleep and Explore, with no time limits. No account: you open the app and start.
Acidalia Planitia, the North Pole and Jezero on Mars, and the rings of Saturn. At sea, more times of day (dawn, blue hour and silver sea) and weather (bioluminescence, aurora, fog and storm), and the day passing on its own. It's not a subscription, and you can try each destination for a minute before you buy.
You download it from the TV. It can't be installed from your phone or computer: the button on this page opens the listing so you can see it, but the download happens on the Apple TV.
The one on your Apple TV, on the TV's home screen.
That's the app's original name. Select Get: it's free to download.
The first time, a screen shows you how to follow it, with the remote drawn, and invites you to breathe for three minutes.
There's nothing to type: you use it entirely with the Apple TV remote.
The web version is the same idea, with the same places, and it works in any browser, phones included. If you want to know how it feels before going to the TV, breathe for three minutes there. And if you're curious about the patterns themselves: breathing exercises, 4-7-8 breathing or box breathing, guided by the wave.
From the TV: on your Apple TV, open the App Store, search for «Mar de Tranquilidad», the app's original name, and select Get. It can't be installed from your phone or computer; the link on this page only shows the listing.
It's free to download, with Open sea and Beach to breathe, sail, sleep or explore with no limits. Pro is a one-time purchase, not a subscription: it adds Mars, Saturn and more times of day and weather at sea. You can try each Pro destination for a minute first.
Pro includes the four destinations it names (Acidalia Planitia, the North Pole, Jezero and the rings of Saturn) and its features. If new destinations are added later, they're sold separately. With Apple's Family Sharing, the purchase works for your family.
No. It's an app you open yourself. If you leave it open without touching anything, the menu hides and the sea keeps going on its own, changing scenes every so often; any button on the remote brings you back. It doesn't replace the Apple TV screensaver.
No. The landscape is the guide, and at the start, if you want, soft text says «breathe in» and «breathe out». The sound of the sea and the wind is generated live, with no recorded audio; among Saturn's rings there's silence.
Yes. It's in English and Spanish, and it follows your Apple TV's language.
Coming soon. Meanwhile, the web version works in any browser, phones included.
No. It's a tool to slow your breathing down and relax for a while. It doesn't measure anything about your health and doesn't replace a professional. If you feel dizzy, go back to breathing normally.
